New York, officially the State of New York, and sometimes known as New York state to differentiate it from New York City, is the most populous state in the Northeastern United States. It is bordered by the states of Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut to the east, the state of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, the Canadian province of Ontario to the north and west, and the Canadian province of Quebec to the north. The state is named after James Stuart, the Duke of York.
